Gabriel had a revelation. He would deliver a message to fans of a new studio that will bring to them exactly the raw content they crave.
Together with porn’s visionary director MimeFreak, Gabriel “Gabe” Guzman launched this new venture: ArchAngel Video. Named for the archangel Gabriel, it’s been just over a year since November 2014 when Gabe and MimeFreak began this new enterprise, and what an amazing year it’s been.
By the close of 2015 this brand new studio racked up 14 XBIZ Award nominations – bringing home trophies for Best New Studio; Director of the Year: Non Feature Release (Tori Black) for one of the studio’s most popular titles of the year, Kendra Lust’s showcase “True Lust”; and Gonzo Series of the Year for “The Booty Movie.” The fledgling studio also garnered a whopping 27 AVN Award nominations.
The popularity of the studio was on full display at the recently held 2016 Adult Entertainment Expo, where hordes of fans lined up to get autographs and snap selfies with ArchAngel stars like Kendra Lust and Ava Addams. So what’s the secret of ArchAngel’s success?
“You know what, I gotta start by giving it to the fans,” MimeFreak told us during AEE. “When we first started the company we went directly to the fans, and we had Kendra Lust’s first interracial scene in a booty movie. I think that was a really good way of kicking in the door to the industry.”
Fans are central to ArchAngel’s approach to video content. The team at ArchAngel look to place like XCritic, Adult DVD Talk, Twitter, Instagram and all other places where porn fans leave comments. MimeFreak interacts with fans directly on his and the studio’s social media, as well as his blog, TheMimeFreak.com.
“The concept of Anal Warrior actually came from a fan,” MimeFreak boasted. “Beautiful Tits was passed along through the fans. If we struggle with a title, we go directly to the fans and have them help us with it.”
Fans have a big say in the genres ArchAngel pursues, the kind of series they produce, who the studio casts in its videos, and even which girl gets the coveted DVD cover. This alliance with the fans, their history in the industry and their ability to get big name stars was a magic formula.
“I’ve been in the industry for almost 11 years now, and to start a new company this day and age, a lot of people – 75 percent of people – said don’t do it,” MimeFreak explained. “So by us going to a mega star like Kendra Lust, and going directly to the fans, gave us that platform of actually growing, and becoming a company to be reckoned with.”
Fans cast which stars appeared in the studio’s XBIZ Award-winning series, “The Booty Movie.” But the biggest fan-based ArchAngel innovation is the studio’s Booty Queen. The studio’s blog states “the Booty Queen is a royal title and a huge honor—she’s the type of woman who can mesmerize fans with her ass and onscreen performances.” Each September fans are polled to see who they want to be crowned Booty Queen, and the winner is anointed every January. Jada Stevens was the first ArchAngel Booty Queen in 2015, and AJ Applegate wears this coveted crown in 2016.
Approaching 30 titles, ArchAngel boasts a roster of stars that reads like a Who’s Hot in Porn list. Abella Danger, Adriana Chechik, AJ Applegate, Annika Albrite, Ava Addams, Dahlia Sky, Jada Stevens, Karmen Karma, Kendra Lust, Mandingo, Megan Rain, Nina Elle, Prince Yahshua, Remy Lacroix, Romi Rain, Sarah Vandella, Summer Brielle, Tori Black and Vicki Chase are just some of the big name stars appearing in ArchAngel videos.
MimeFreak describes the studio’s artistic direction in one word, which he said with tremendous emphasis: “RAW!” He elaborated some more, saying “We try to get it as raw as possible. A lot of people want to see different scenarios, but we kind of keep it authentic. Straight grounded gonzo hardcore, something that the fans actually interact with, so we try to keep it as basic as possible.”
With more than 40 major award nominations, Yourgasms wondered what stood out to MimeFreak; what was he most proud of looking back at 2015?
“You know what, I’m most proud of the company. Overall, just being involved and finally have a platform again where I can shine. You know what I mean? So I don’t have one particular baby. We have a great team assembled and, you know, we’re still growing. And just having a job in this day and age and being able to have creative control on what I want to do – that’s the best part.”
Though their fans were disappointed that the studio didn’t come home with any AVN Awards, MimeFreak took it in stride. “We are still appreciative of what AVN nominated and recognized us for. To have our company recognized among all these great companies that have been around for a long time, is itself an award. So we don’t have to take anything home. We’re here! We’re recognized!”
And what does MimeFreak have in store for ArchAngel’s fans in 2016? Put very simply, “More. Hot. Shit,” MimeFreak told us with a laugh. “That’s all I can say.”
