The beautiful and seductive Kitty Rains comes from a Land Down Under. Born and raised in Australia, she entered the adult industry in 1997, originally a dancer, model and centerfold. She soon after found her niche in the heyday of Internet porn in the early 2000s. After starring in a number of online films, she quickly swapped sides of the camera and made her success running sexcontents.com – a niche content provider for adult websites. During its peak period, sexcontents.com was the largest provider of niche adult content in the world. With the advent of digital cameras, sexcontents.com also became the first company to become a brokerage for adult content. This Web business model was later adapted to consumer-based purchase through sites such as clips4sale. It can be said that Kitty helped pave the road for adult internet as it is today.
After retiring from production, Kitty traveled the world and made USA her home.
She still consults and occasionally gets behind the camera and on very very rare occasions, in front of it!
Yourgasms – When did you get started in porn?
Kitty Rains – I started in Porn in 1997. There was no title for the production as it was for a very early-days Internet distribution film, which was never released on DVD. Back then, websites didn’t assign titles to their videos; they were marketing website names, not video names.
Yourgasms – How did you get your first acting job?
Kitty – I answered an ad in a city newspaper looking for women to do videos. I had already made a good name for myself as a centerfold that year (I had been a commercial model for a number of years prior), but seeing that Australia is not a very big country and there were not many magazines (I had already appeared in them all), porn was a natural progression.
Yourgasms – What was your first day on the job like?
Kitty – It was pretty much like any other shoot I’d been on; the only differences were the video cameras and that I had sex with someone. Actually I should say it was easier work than any shoot I’d been on as there wasn’t a big demand to get perfect still-shots so in that respect it was different. But it was a lot of fun, the crew and I joked and laughed a lot. The funniest laugh was when I found out that the company owner (who had interviewed and hired me) had traded places with his actor for that shoot. The actor was operating the video camera and the owner/director appeared in the film just because he really liked me so it was his first film too! Actually we ended up living together and running the studios as a partnership for years afterward, but that’s another story. For years we always laughed about him pulling that switcheroo.
Yourgasms – Do you feel as a woman you’re being exploited by your industry?
Kitty – This is an interesting question because I could answer it a number of ways. Simply due to the fact that its phrasing leaves a lot open to interpretation, mostly because people tend to talk in secondary plural generalizations, which this could be taken for. Also, there are different types of exploitation, relating to morals, ethics, economics, etc. so I’ll give you a few answers as shortly as I can:
Do I feel that women in general are being exploited by the industry? Yes and No. Don’t you just hate when people do that?! My arguments for and against will flip-flop back and forth as I answer. I will try to summarize at the end:
Economics. The shooting life and the shelf life of girls is phenomenally expedient. After just a couple of months, talent is spat out with very few, if any, ways to capitalize on their previous work, their name or fame. Is this intentional? I don’t believe it is. It is simply due to supply and demand and is the nature of the beast that the Internet has created. Piracy is largely to blame. Studios can’t afford to contract girls for extended amounts of time, and with videos being freely distributed everywhere by pirates and tube sites, talent becomes saturated very quickly thus studios are constantly seeking fresh faces to turn over for as minimal wages as possible. This is very different from the video days of contracted six-figure starlets, slower releases, and more room for career growth within the industry. (Right now the industry is scaling down. We lost another 15 large companies in 2015.)
Do I feel that ethically and morally women are exploited by the industry? No. These are consenting adults, performing consensual acts in exchange for monetary remuneration. They know what they are doing when they get involved and each studio makes sure that talent is aware that once their film is captured it cannot be rescinded. For the most part the women who enter this industry do so because they enjoy sexual activities, they enjoy the attention, and a week to a month’s wages for a day’s work is not to be shirked at in this economy. Society in general has become more accepting of adult entertainment. Even the AVN awards are televised now, so these ladies are more comfortable being involved in the industry now than previously. There’s less stigma (not to say it’s a cake walk – we are far from that level of acceptance.) So for ladies who are more open about their sexuality, who do enjoy being on film, and do want to earn money doing what they enjoy, I see no harm. There’s a famous quote that if you do what you enjoy, you will never work a day in your life.
Are there women who do participate in the industry just because of the money? Absolutely, life happens, sometimes people find themselves stuck in a financial bind and porn seems like a good option to make fast cash. Well, these days the money really is not nearly as lucrative as it once was. No, they cannot take it back once it’s done, but as previously stated they are made aware of that reality. Ultimately each adult is responsible for their own decisions in life, and porn may not be the best decision for some people. But is it exploitative? Some people work more than 40 hours a week flipping burgers or stacking grocery shelves. Why? Do those people enjoy what they are doing? Of course they don’t, but they are there simply because they need money to survive. The only difference is that porn pays you more and faster. and you’re probably going to have more fun doing it. Whatever stigma society still holds against porn actors is moot. On a completely ethical level there is no difference – porn is just another source of income. Both workers are performing duties set forth by a higher level of a hierarchy, in exchange for an agreed remuneration, with the sole purpose of producing profits for the investors. One could say that any person who receives a wage in exchange for their most precious commodity, that being time, is exploited. The one exception to this rule would be that the industry, through its use of digital format media, has made production more accessible to individuals. Some performers shoot their own content and upload it to make profit for themselves. (Webcam performers also do this to a degree, although they split profits with their networks.) These individuals invest a lot of time, energy and resources into their productions. I would say that 99% of these people are doing what they enjoy for a living. They are a fortunate group of people in this world.
Actually I think that all the points I’ve made apply equally to any man in porn. There are plenty of gay male porn actors, even gay-for-pay actors (men who are not gay in their personal lives but will perform in gay porn) and trans actors. In fact, gay porn is a huge chunk of the marketplace these days. Are twinks exploited by the industry? Are bears exploited by the industry? Are transsexuals exploited by the industry? I don’t see that gender has any real relevance to the question it should simply read: Are people who perform in porn exploited by the industry?
In summary, all wage-slave workers are exploited. Is the porn industry any worse? No, it’s generally better. “Exploitation,” in my opinion, is simply another PC term used to try to push other people’s ethics and agendas onto others. It’s rarely anyone trying to help another group up. For all its faults the porn industry still does a fairly decent job of self-regulating and taking care of its members (however short lived that may be). Honestly, people should worry more about where their chocolate comes from (child slavery) than what consenting adults are doing.
Yourgasms – Do you feel proud of your work?
Kitty – For the most part yes, though a great deal of my career has been behind the camera. I also helped to develop a lot of new ideas in the early days of the adult Internet. I’m very proud of those achievements within the industry. As far as my onscreen performances go, it’s all just shits and giggles. I don’t take it seriously. Last time I checked they weren’t giving Oscars for porn, nor should they…it’s just sex. Everyone (with the exception of monks) does it. Simply the fact I happen to allow myself to be filmed doing it is nothing to be proud of, but it’s nothing to be ashamed of either. It is what it is. All I worry about is that everyone on set has fun at that moment. All we have in life is moments. I doubt I’ll look back over my life on my death bed and say “Oh yeah – I was a porn star.” But I’m sure one day when I’m old and decrepit, my grandkids will get a chuckle from it.
Yourgasms – Do you have any mentors in the industry? What have they taught you?
Kitty – I do have some mentors and people I have learned from. The first, being the most recognized name, would be Ron Jeremy. We’ve known each other for years. The big lesson I learned from Ron, while being his roommate at AVN, was to never allow yourself to be typecast. Ron is the ultimate typecast persona. He tried may times to break out of the industry and into mainstream, but he mostly cameos or parodies himself. Now, Ron is one of the most well-rounded, well-versed, educated, world-savvy people you could ever wish to meet. Whenever we get together we have great political and philosophical conversations. But people don’t see that. They just want to shake his hand because he banged thousands of chicks. So as much as this has been my career, I’ve always diversified both within the industry and outside it. I could be shooting a film one week and helping construct a village in a third-world country the next week.
Yourgasms – How do friends and family feel about your job?
Kitty – My immediate family are indifferent about it. It’s just my job. I’ve been doing this coming up on 20 years. My friends, for the most part are people within the industry, or who have been connected with it at one time of another. We are the proverbial birds who flock together. When I meet new people I don’t usually tell them upfront. I allow them to see me for the person I am first. Usually they are more accepting of my career if they get to know me as an intelligent, witty and caring person. I guess a lot of that comes from my not wanting to be stereotyped as I was mentioning previously.
Yourgasms – Do you make enough money acting in adult movies to live, or do you need a side job?
Kitty – One would definitely need another source of income. While porn still pays fairly good money compared to other incomes, a typical actor would not be cast in enough films to make a full time income for any extended amount of time. Generally, the system is that a new performer signs with a booker/agency and will go to Miami and shoot for a couple of weeks (or if they have a highly sought after appearance the may get a month or 2 of work), then travel to Vegas/Phoenix for a few days to a week, then on to LA for a couple to a few weeks. Pay during this time ranges typically between $500-1200/1500 per shoot. In a short time, they will have worked with all the major studios willing to cast them. So in total approximately one to 3 months, if you are sought after perhaps 6. After that – you are basically on your own. Many young actresses use the money to pay their debts or college tuition and move back into regular secular jobs. A number perform and then move to webcams or escorting to profit off their new but short-lived “fame.”
If a performer is resourceful, dedicated and willing to work hard enough, they could make a fairly good income producing their own content. But that takes considerable effort. A reliable, steady wage from another source is always the best income to have. Porn should be secondary.
Yourgasms – What happens if you don’t like the other performer or performers with whom you’re doing a scene?
Kitty – While I strive to have fun at all my scenes. I’m there to work, I get the scene done. The upside is that I don’t have to work with these people 40 hours a week for 50 weeks a year. After a few hours, I can choose to never see them again. It has rarely ever happened; I can only think of one occasion in 20 years. That’s not a bad record!
Yourgasms – Are you nervous before shooting a scene? Excited?
Kitty – The only time I am ever nervous before a scene is if I am expected to perform something out of the ordinary, which I haven’t performed before. However, after almost 2 decades, I’ve done a LOT, so this happens less and less.
Yourgasms – How do you prepare for a scene? What do you have to do to get ready?
Kitty – Hair, makeup. the usual girly things. If the scene requires anal then I try not to eat too much or too late the evening prior, and before the scene do a colon cleanse. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try to schedule around it, menstruation occurs on some unscheduled day (of course this usually happens right before – or even during a shoot (Murphy’s Law) in which case we usually use a sea sponge inserted in the vagina to absorb any blood.
Yourgasms – How do you keep your lipstick on?
Kitty – I don’t. It always comes off! Especially during blow job scenes. I do the best I can to find long wearing/smudge proof/waterproof/all-the-proofs lipstick but honestly I’ve yet to find one that can last a scene. Perhaps that will be my next venture: makeup line featuring blow job proof lipstick and mascara!
Yourgasms – What kind of lube do you use?
Kitty – For vaginal sex I don’t use lube for STD-tested, bare back scenes as I make a lot of natural lubrication. I’m a gusher and squirter, so that helps. For condom shoots I always use a lube. For anal I prefer a silicon based lube they are less sticky and last longer. In the interest of public health I should mention here to ALWAYS use a latex condom with a new partner and use a lube to ensure it remains intact. Remember that lamb skin condoms are only effective against pregnancy and will not protect you against STDs.
Yourgasms – Who is your favorite director?
Kitty – Joone. He’s the director who made Pirates. He won 2 AVNs for directing. He was the first porn director to really merge CGI and porn, producing a quality film which could have rivaled any mainstream production of its time. He isn’t just a great director, he had a vision: to dissolve the lines between porn and mainstream quality. Unfortunately, the industry took a huge hit right around the time Pirates was released and no studio wants to spend big bucks on porn so we’re seeing the same corny stuff we always have.
Yourgasms – Are your on-camera orgasms ever real?
Kitty – Absolutely. I’m a very sexual person and I enjoy my scenes.
Yourgasms – How often do you get off from porn shoots?
Kitty – Almost always, unless it’s a fetish scene – some of those I don’t if I am being the submissive.
Yourgasms – Does size matter?
Kitty – Not really. In fact, an average to smaller size is always better for anal, which I really enjoy. I think the only time it matters is when it’s a monster cock and then it matters because it’s probably going to hurt a bit!
Yourgasms – How does it feel to have everyone watching you on set?
Kitty – There’s really not as many people as you’d imagine. It’s not Hollywood. Usually an actor (or 2), actress (or 2), director/cameraman (usually one person does both) and perhaps a photographer. These days, porn is pretty much DIY. So it’s not like having a stadium of people watching. Personally, it wouldn’t bother me if it were. I am very comfortable with what I do.
Yourgasms – What was your favorite scene, and why is it your favorite?
Kitty – I have so many it’s hard to pick one! Ok the one that stands out as being a lot of fun was a scene I did about 18 years ag. Our studio had just taken on a new male actor, whom I had not yet met in person. I was to be the first girl he worked with, alongside another male, to show him the ropes. Only everyone in the studio told him that I was a Spanish exchange student from Barcelona and that I couldn’t speak a word of English. He was saying all kinds of crazy and wacky things during the filming. How the small crew kept a straight face I will never know. At the end of the shoot I walked up to him, shook his hand and in a broad Australian accent said, “Well done, Mate. You made the cut. Welcome to my team.” The poor young fellow almost died of embarrassment. I remember editing that film and stripping out most of the audio. The one thing I recall was at some point him told me his Greek mother ‘s recipe for moussaka (a Greek food) in a passionate, assertive/aggressive yet sexy tone. Truly hilarious stuff.
My favorite scenes are always the funniest ones.
Yourgasms – What was the strangest thing you were asked to do in a scene? Did you like it?
Kitty – I am usually the one coming up with the strange ideas! One time I was shooting at a hotel, and saw a TV remote controller nearby so I suggested I should do a scene in which I try to change the TV channel using the kegel muscles in my vagina. From memory, it didn’t work. I kept the remote control and paid the hotel for a replacement, just in case anyone is worried.
Yourgasms – Porn stars are always in such great physical shape. What’s your workout routine like?
Kitty – We must not be watching the same porn. These days anyone can be a porn actor/actress (they don’t make porn “stars” anymore). They come in all shapes and sizes. There is even an annual expo in Las Vegas just for BBW porn and they have their own award show. Some of those ladies are size 20 +. So no, porn stars are not always in great shape, only a few of them are. My personal routine consists of habitual sleeping in until at least 10, preferably midday. My breakfast of choice is ice cream or a buffet brunch sometime around noon. I do not work out. I have a gym membership just so I can use their Jacuzzi and sauna. Every other week I do tai chi if I can wake up in time for the class.
Approaching 40 years old I must admit I am 20 lbs. more than I was in my heyday. (I’m 120-125.) But actually I’m enjoying having curves – sex doesn’t bruise me so much!
Yourgasms – Does your private sex life ever mirror the movies you’re in?
Kitty – Often. I have been in the swinger lifestyle for around 17 years. I go to swinger’s clubs and parties, and enjoy orgies, public and group sex with other members.
Yourgasms – Have you taken anything you’ve tried for the first time at work into your private life?
Kitty – So much. I got into porn when I was 18, and I only had 3 short term boyfriends before that. They were all very vanilla. So I learned a lot from being in the industry.
Yourgasms – What would you like people to know or understand about the adult entertainment industry in general?
Kitty – I’d like people to know that piracy is killing the industry. If you want to see more porn, please pay for your porn. We’re not like Hollywood – we don’t get millions of dollars to place a Marlboro cigarette or a Pepsi into a scene. We don’t have actors on $20 million dollar contracts. A lot of what you see is produced by mom-n-pop or DIY guy studios. Support the little guys.
That, and don’t believe everything you hear or read about porn. We’re people just like everyone else.
